You’ve made a thrilling and life-changing decision to enhance the size of your breasts. Now, have you given any thought to the placement of your implants? Without a doubt, you’ve thought long and hard about the size of your new implants, and that’s a good thing. But there’s a lot more to breast augmentation than just sizing. To help you achieve the precise results you want, you also need to work closely with your plastic surgeon to determine the proper placement of your implants.
Here’s a closer look at the two main types of breast implant placement, along with the pros and cons of each procedure.
Over the muscle (subglandular placement)
This technique positions your implant beneath your existing breast tissue so that it rests on top of the chest muscle.
PROS:
● You’ll more likely be able to breast-feed in the future. This is because your implant will rest below your breast glands.
● You may experience less discomfort post-surgery and a faster recovery.
● Your implants will move less during physical activity.
CONS:
● Your appearance may look less natural.
● Mammogram readings may be less accurate.
● You may have a higher rate of capsular contracture, a rare complication when scar tissue forms and squeezes the implant.
Under the muscle (submuscular placement)
This surgery places your implant partially under your pectoralis major chest muscle.
PROS:
● You are likely to experience more accurate mammograms.
● You may enjoy a more natural appearance.
● You may have a reduced rate of capsular contracture.
CONS:
● You may experience slightly more discomfort immediately following surgery, and have a slightly longer recovery time.
Keep in mind that your body type will play a big part in terms of where your breast implants are placed. For example, if you have strong or large chest muscles, you may be better-suited for above-the-muscle placement. This is because strong/large chest muscles can distort the shape of your breasts as they move. For another example, if you have a small amount of breast tissue, you may be better suited for under-the-muscle placement since you have very little tissue to cover your implants.
