This May, we’d like to honor Skin Cancer Awareness Month by sharing expert advice on how to best protect your skin from harmful UV rays, look out for warning signs of skin cancer and ensure healthy skin for years to come.
Invest in broad-spectrum, medical-grade sunscreen.
As you already may know, sunscreen is an essential tool in the fight against skin cancer. We recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher in your daily skin care routine. When it comes to medical-grade formulations, our skin care experts proudly offer SPF products from SkinCeuticals®. And to help you protect your skin against harmful UV rays today and every day, in honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we’re offering 20% OFF all sunscreens! Claim your savings during our Pop-Up Sale, running from May 23 to 27.
Stick to the shade and cover up when outdoors.
Reducing your exposure to UV radiation can help lower your risk for skin cancer. When spending an extended period of time outside, try to avoid direct exposure to sunlight. Find some shade under a tree or even bring an umbrella to your next outdoor event. Be conscious of what you wear as well. It’s always best to have a pair of UV-blocking sunglasses and to stay covered up with long sleeves, pants and a hat. By practicing effective sun protection all year round, you can reduce your risk for skin cancer and avoid any bothersome sunburns. It’s a win-win situation!
Learn your ABCDEs for early detection.
Did you know when skin cancers are detected and treated early, they’re highly curable? This is why you should make a habit of regularly checking your skin for any changes or unusual moles. To help you remember how to look for signs of skin cancer, use this ABCDE method:
A: Asymmetry – Different shapes on each side of the mole
B: Border irregularity – Uneven or jagged edges
C: Color – Different shades of brown or black
D: Diameter – Larger than 1/4 inch
E: Evolving – Has changed over time
At CNY Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery, we specialize in skin cancer diagnosis, treatment and reconstruction. If you’ve noticed a spot that has changed color, grown larger, become irregular in shape or begun to bleed, we urge you to schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Gregory Baum or Dr. Anthony Deboni, as soon as possible. Remember, the earlier skin cancer is caught, the better the prognosis.
