1. Skin care is key.
Perhaps the most important piece of advice we can give is to moisturize, not just every day, but every time you bathe or wash your hands. Every time you wash your hands, face or body, you’re stripping your skin of its natural protective oils, which help lock in moisture. Right after washing, remember to moisturize with products that work well for dry skin. Switch to a heavy moisturizer that’s an ointment or cream (instead of a lotion) for more hydration and a thicker layer of protection. To take even better care of your skin, make sure you use warm water (instead of hot) when you bathe and cut down your shower time to avoid drying out.
As for your skin care outside of a good moisturizer, refrain from using exfoliating products and other skin care that contains any of the following drying ingredients: alcohol (except for hand sanitizer), alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), fragrance (including deodorant soaps) and retinoids. If you experience extra sensitive skin in the winter, try simplifying your routine with a moisturizer and sunscreen in the morning and a gentle cleanser and moisturizer at night. As your protective oils are restored, you can slowly reintroduce your favorite serums, toners and other beauty treatments to your daily routine.
2. Bundle up for comfort and protection.
We cover up from head to toe with gloves, scarves, hats, etc. to stay warm, but it’s also an effective way to protect your skin from being harmed by the cold. Prolonged exposure to the harsh winter elements can leave our hands and other exposed areas of skin red, dry and irritated. The next time the temperatures dip and the wind picks up, put on your favorite pair of mittens; it’s the best defense against the freezing, dry air. If you have sensitive skin, try to wear only smooth, nonirritating fabrics that are loose and comfortable to avoid any irritation. Another precautionary measure is to wash your winter clothes and gear with detergents that are labeled safe for sensitive skin and free of harsh chemicals and fragrances.
3. Give your skin the revitalization it deserves!
Did you know winter is the perfect time of year to undergo laser skin treatments? In the colder months, you’re more likely to be cooped up indoors, allowing your skin more time to heal away from the sun. Laser skin treatments can renew your skin, stimulating new collagen and elastin growth. Enjoy smoother, younger-looking skin at CNY Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery with IPL photofacials, laser acne treatments, laser skin resurfacing and more. Above all else, be sure to prioritize self-care this season. That can mean undergoing a professional medspa treatment, but it could also mean relaxing at home, reading your favorite book, indulging in retail therapy, going on a long walk or whatever it is you need to feel good inside and out!
