In honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month this May, we’d like to extol the benefits of sunscreen and annual skin cancer screenings.
The goal is to detect skin cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. You can do this by scheduling an annual skin cancer screening with Drs. Baum or Deboni, leading skin cancer experts who specialize in skin cancer diagnosis, treatment, and reconstruction. You can schedule your skin cancer screening or consultation today by calling (315) 663-0112 or requesting a consultation online.
In the meantime, you can protect your skin by knowing the warning signs of skin cancer. See a doctor immediately if you notice a mole with:
A-Asymmetrical shape
B-Borders that are uneven
C-Numerous colors (brown, tan, or black)
D-Diameter larger than a pencil eraser tip
E-Evolution, or change in size, shape, elevation, or other changes
Keep in mind that there’s no advantage to getting “color” from the sun. That glow you’re after is actually sun damage, the main culprit for lines, wrinkles, age spots, and other complexion irregularities. Applying SPF 30 or higher every day of the year is the single-most important action you can take to prevent skin cancer, sun damage, and premature aging.
But if that doesn’t inspire you to slather on SPF every day, maybe this will: Sunscreen is actually your greatest beauty weapon! A prospective study published in Dermatology evaluated 32 participants who applied SPF 30 to their face daily over a 52-week period. Several photoaging signs were evaluated by the dermatologist, including overall photodamage, overall skin tone, crow’s feet, fine lines, mottled pigmentation, discrete pigmentation, evenness of skin tone, clarity, and texture. The study found that all signs of photoaging improved over the study period, and improvements were seen as early as 12 weeks into the study, leading researchers to conclude that daily use of sunscreen may actually improve—not just prevent—signs of existing photodamage!
