There’s still time to schedule your laser hair removal treatments if you want to prepare for bikini season. But remember — not all laser hair removal treatmentslaser hair removal are created equal. The skill of your laser technician can make or break your treatment, and so can you if you’re not properly prepared. Get your best results by following these expert treatment tips from CNY’s Beauty Team.
Stop tanning!
We hate that we have to say this, but even in this day and age, despite our heightened awareness of the dangers of sun exposure, some people are still allowing themselves to get color from the sun. The problem is, there’s no such thing as a healthy amount of color. Even a slight tan is a sign of sun damage. Though you may think it looks flattering, the sun is ravaging your skin cells, causing them to repair themselves and speeding their aging process. But premature aging aside, tanning is dangerous for laser hair removal because the increase of melanin in your skin confuses the laser into thinking that your skin is the target, not your hair root. This can result in burns and other complications. For this reason, we will not treat you if you have been exposed to the sun and have any color.
Start shaving!
Shaving is the best thing you can do to prepare for your laser hair reduction treatments. Shaving stimulates new hair growth, causing your hair roots to be in the active hair growth stage. This is vital because laser hair removal only works on active hair follicles. The second reason shaving helps is that it keeps your hair shorter, enabling the laser to pinpoint the hair roots. If your hair is too long, the laser won’t be able to detect and disable your hair roots. For this reason, we recommend shaving a day or two before your treatments so there’s a tiny bit of stubble for your treatment. You can even shave the day of your treatment.
Go bare
Before your appointment, skip the daily moisturizer, antiperspirant, perfume and skin care products — anything that you would normally apply to your skin. You need to leave your skin completely bare the day of your appointment! Laser hair removal needs clean skin to safely disable your hair roots. Any product can interfere with the laser’s effectiveness and raise your risk of injury and diminish your results.
